In recent years, the sports industry has witnessed a significant rise in adopting veganism among athletes, and it makes sense (scuba diving is no exception). Contrary to popular belief, a vegan diet can provide all the necessary nutrients and fuel for athletes to excel in their respective sports. As a SCUBA diver, freediver, and ultra runner, I have lots of experience with this. I will showcase some remarkable vegan athletes and debunk the misconceptions surrounding protein requirements in a vegan diet. The myth that vegan diets lack sufficient protein is a common misconception many athletes and most people hold. This is not true, and scientific evidence supports the notion that plant-based protein sources can adequately meet the protein needs of athletes. Through quotes and interviews from nutritionists and sports experts, we will shed light on the benefits and feasibility of obtaining protein from vegan sources. Vegans can meet their protein needs with a variety of plant-based sources and combinations, and the absorption of plant-based protein is accelerated when consumed with other forms of iron-rich food. Myth 2: Insufficient muscle gain on a vegan diet Many athletes believe that building muscle requires animal protein and that vegans cannot achieve muscle growth. This myth is easily debunked by several vegan athletes who have achieved significant muscle growth and success, challenging this notion. For instance, Patrik Baboumian, a German weightlifter and former strongman, was awarded the title “Germany’s strongest man” four times, adopted a vegan diet in 2011, and continues advocating for its benefits.
